Report: Wycombe Wanderers Women 5-1 Woodley United Ladies

The Chairgirls made it two wins with five goals on the bounce, as they secured the win over close rivals Woodley United on Sunday. The league’s top goalscorer, Kayla Potter, bagged another brace, as Jess Watkins, Libby Monaghan and Hana Macdiarmid all added to the tally, in a game which ended 5-1.

It was a quick start for the hosts who opened the scoring in only the sixth minute of the game. Potter’s high-pressure press on the Woodley keeper allowed for her to capitalise on a poor goal clearance from close range and bat the ball into the back of the net, giving the Blues an early advantage.

The remainder of the half offered multiple opportunities for the Chairgirls to extend their lead, but Woodley’s goalkeeper was quick with her feet to deny the most clear-cut opportunities and nullify the threat, keeping the scoreline as 1-0 going into the break.

Entering the final 45, the hosts looked keen to double their established lead and they did so in fast-fashion. Watkins’ rapid run allowed for her to break in front of the visitor’s back line down the right wing and send in a neat cross to find Potter, who slotted home to claim her brace and make it 2-0 in the 49th minute.

Watkins played a vital role in the Chairgirls’ third goal of the afternoon as she executed a stunning looping hit from 20 yards out which soared over the keeper before dipping beautifully under the crossbar in the 61st minute.

Blues’ loanee, Monaghan, made it four only minutes later as she picked up a pass from Potter centrally outside the box and stayed strong up against her marker before slotting home in the 68th minute.

The visitors claimed one back moments later however, as they were rewarded a penalty for a handball inside their area, closing the gap to 4-1 as the game edged into the final 20 minutes.

Despite Woodley placing one in the back of the net, loanee, Macdiarmid, hit home her first goal in the blue quarters, as well as her first senior competitive goal, to cap off the game with a 5-1 win for the Chairgirls.

Manager, Carl Simon, reflected on his side’s strong performance, stating “It was a really good game for us today. Two games on the trot that we’ve scored five now – ten goals in two games.

“Really pleased with how they performed. The girls went out and executed the game plan perfectly well, so really happy.”

Simon also named youngster, Sophie Harvey, as player of the match for her “first class performance” and fantastic quality on the ball.

The fine result solidifies the Chairgirls’ position as second in the league, as they sit within five points of league leaders, Ascot, who have a game in hand over the Blues.
