Chairgirls progress to next round of SRWFL Cup with an action packed win.
The Chairgirls took the short trip to Penn & Tylers Green on Sunday to replay their league cup fixture which was abandoned at half-time last weekend. Two well-taken set pieces from Danielle Puddefoot, as well as contributions from Bobby Lynch and Jess Watkins secured the away victory and progression to the next round of the competition.
It was a quick start for the Chairgirls, who asserted early dominance in the pace of the game and threatening attacking play in the final third. Puddefoot was the one to send the Wanderers ahead after delivering a low and hard free kick on the edge of the box which nestled comfortably in the back of the net in the 15th minute.
Continuing to push in their attacking third after going ahead, Wycombe were awarded a penalty in the 23rd minute following a foul on Kayla Potter who was edging in on goal. Puddefoot lined up for the spot kick which was executed comfortably to double the visitors lead before the break.
The remainder of the half stayed defensively sound from both sides, as player of the match, Molly Scott, who stepped in late between the sticks for her first team debut following Amber Taylor stepping down with injury prior to kick-off, denied the hosts from claiming one back late in the half.
Having established a strong lead going into half-time, the Chairgirls returned from the break with the same pace and attacking promise but failed to hit the target with any of their early attempts. However, captain, Lynch, extended the Wanderers’ advantage even further as her free-kick from 35-yards out took a bounce in the box and looped over the keeper, making it 3-0 in the 62nd minute.
Despite having orchestrated a convincing lead by the hour mark of the match, the hosts fought back with two rapid conversions in the 71st and 72nd minutes.
Following being awarded a penalty in the 70th minute, Penn’s initial spot kick missed the target and rattled off the woodwork, however, the home side worked off the rebound and converted to draw one back in quick fashion. Only a minute later, Penn closed the scoreline gap even further as they netted a close-range attempt, making it 2-3 in the 72nd minute.
In spite of the hosts’ comeback, the Chairgirls were quick to claim their fourth and secure the win, as Watkins found herself on the end of a fantastic long-range pass from Ellen Wardlaw and rolled in her hit in the 76thminute.
The visitors held onto their lead for the final 10 minutes to seal the 2-4 win and confirm their spot in the next round of the SRWFL Cup.
