HAF Christmas Camp Delivered for Local Children

The Education Department at Wycombe Wanderers Sports & Education Trust (WWSET) were delighted to welcome children from the local area to our Holiday & Food (HAF) Christmas Multi-Sports Camp hosted at Highcrest Academy from Monday 20th to Thursday 23rd December, in partnership with Buckinghamshire County Council. The camp was made available at no cost to children aged 7-11 years old who are eligible to receive free school meals ensuring that they not only had the opportunity to take part in lots of fun physical and social activity during their school holiday but also had the opportunity to receive a hot and healthy meal each day.

WWSET were pleased that a total of 39 local children attended the camp which across the four days resulted in a cumulative 936 hours of positive activity being delivered.

During the camp, the children took part in various sporting activities including Dodgeball, Cricket, Football, Benchball, Ultimate Frisbee and Boules to name a few! The camp culminated in a Winter Olympics tournament being held where the children represented their “countries” across many team challenges with the chance to earn points and prizes!  They also sat down and ate a delicious Christmas Dinner on the last day which was then followed by a Christmas party.

In addition, the children were delighted to have the opportunity to chat with Wycombe Wanderers midfielder, David Wheeler, who joined them via Zoom for a Question and Answer session during the Christmas party on Thursday. The children loved learning about David’s favourite Christmas film, the best team he has played against, and much more including whether he likes Brussel Sprouts or not!

Mark Guildea, Head of Education at WWSET, was delighted with the success of the course. He said:

“It was great to see the children and staff having so much fun throughout the camp and I’m glad that we were able to host such a fulfilling week of activities for local kids who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend holiday provisions such as this due to the related cost barriers. We hope that everyone who took part goes on to have a safe and enjoyable Christmas and we look forward to hopefully seeing them at future HAF camps!”

WWSET would like to place on record our thanks to Buckinghamshire Council for funding the camp, Lisa Walker and all the team at Big Community Takeaway who provided all of the amazing food, as well as Cater 4 You who kindly donated all of the food packaging and tableware required at the camp.
