On Saturday 16th March, we were delighted to host a group of VIPs at our EFL League 1 fixture against Northampton Town from the Barrie Wells Trust.
As part of the Box4Kids initiative, which is delivered by Barrie Wells Trust, partners such as sports teams provide a safe and relaxing environment for children to be treated like a VIP for the day. These much deserved experiences provide quality time for each child and their guest, away from the day to day challenges they face with their life altering illnesses and/or disabilities.
Often boxes are left empty at events and this provides the Barrie Wells Trust with fantastic opportunities to fill these with deserving children. Organisations are able to simply donate their boxes to the Barrie Wells Trust for individual events and the team then handle all the logistics for the day.
One child who attended was 9-year-old S who has been through 3 and a half years of chemotherapy with Lymphoblastic Lymphoma.
Mum has been in touch to say – “S had a brilliant time – thank you so much!! He and his friend M loved it and even got to chat to one of the players. My husband said the hosts were so kind and welcoming too. Massive thanks to everyone involved. The boys were so happy that Wycombe won and are planning on going back to see them play again soon. S has been gutted since breaking his collarbone and this cheered him up so, so much. It’s the first time he’s really spoken to another kid that’s going through the same treatment that he had too, and I think it sparked some really interesting and worthwhile conversations at home. It’s a lot for their little brains to cope with and meeting other kids in a similar situation helps them to feel that they aren’t alone by having gone through it all. Please pass on our thanks to everyone involved – we are really grateful.”
Another young person who attended was 18-year-old T who has Leukaemia. Mum has been in touch to say. “T had a really lovely time thank you so much. And he enjoyed meeting the other families too. It was a really nice treat for him after a tough few months”.
We look forward to welcoming many of the children back to Adam’s Park again soon, as well as working closely with Barrie Wells Trust to provide more unforgettable days out!
