WWSET are delighted to share that our friend Ian Wright, has successfully completed the mammoth task of a 100km ultra-marathon called “Race to the Stones” on the weekend of July 9th and 10th. The event began in Lewknor, Oxfordshire, and finished in Avebury, Wiltshire with the money fundraised being kindly donated to Wycombe Wanderers Sports & Education Trust to enable us to deliver high-quality education and health & wellbeing projects which generate life-changing habits.
Here’s what Ian had this to say about the challenge:
“Race to the Stones was an amazing experience, though the going was hard for much of the 63 miles of byways, trails and wide open tracks of the Ridgeway National Trail between Stokenchurch and Avebury stone circle. We suffered with dust and paths baked hard in the sun, but banter with other racers and knowing we were doing it for the Sports & Education Trust kept our morale high as the miles ticked past and temperatures steadily rose. We were very glad to get to the halfway point to have refuge from the sweltering sunshine, patch-up blistered feet in the medical tent and enjoy a much-needed evening meal. Into the second half of the walk, the cooler evening air rejuvenated us and we marched on into the dark, with the moon lighting the chalk white track ahead. Night-walking plays with the mind, so when we saw the moon repeatedly set and rise on the horizon it took quite a while to realise it was an effect of the rising and falling path, that was an incredible phenomenon to witness. As the sun rose we were within sight of Avebury and spirits soared to know one more push would see us to the end. After 22 hours on the trail, we came into the stone circle and shortly after crossed the finish line to receive our tea and medals. We were well and truly spent, but the feeling of achievement in that moment was unmatchable.”
Mark Guildea, Head of Education at WWSET, had this to say of Ian’s achievement and subsequent generosity: “We at Wycombe Wanderers Sports & Education Trust are proud of Ian’s achievements. He has shown immense bravery and determination to complete such a physically and mentally demanding challenge. We are humbled to receive the donations from Ian’s fundraising efforts, which will go a long way to further supporting more of the most vulnerable and in need children in the county. We thank him for all his efforts.”
